I found this while Stumbling about the web today; the “invisible web”. It’s an article on why some sites and pages are “invisible” when searching the web using service like Google. 

It was originally written in 2000 and since then, as the article concedes, many of the issues have been addressed. However, it’s an interesting piece and worth checking out.
